The Complete Magical Series
A princess determined to break her curse.
Her kingdom under constant threat.
Four men scarred by magic, determined to reclaim their humanity.
Grade: 4
This review is for the series as a whole, instead of the individual books. Getting the disclaimers out of the way, this is a Reverse Harem (RH). For those that don’t know yet what that is, Reverse Harem is when 1 woman ends up with 3 or more male partners.
Princess Maeve is the first in her family to have magic in 400 years, which wouldn’t be a problem except magic is forbidden. The time has come that she must flee and her godmother sends for a few dragons to protect her. Now she is living in a magical tower being protected by 4 talking dragons that were cursed 200 years ago. Over the course of the 4 books, Maeve learns how to control her magic, fixes the curse so the boys can shift whenever they want, breaks the curse cast on her brother and wages a revolution to bring magic back to her kingdom.
As is typical in RH’s, each book focuses on strengthening her relationship with each individual man. In this way, you get to spend time with each pairing and understand how the relationship would work. I enjoyed that each man had their own unique character and had their own issues to overcome.
With romantic fantasy, the focus of the book very much makes a difference on how the book reads. This book is definitely fantasy first, romance second. The world, magic, and creatures are all focused heavily on. Whereas, the falling in love portion just sort of happens. As they spend more time together you get to see more of how the relationship works, but the falling in love is less “falling” and more “just is”. As a romance reader, I did wish for more romance and less world. However, I did enjoy the fantasy world portions, which is rare for me. I mean, who doesn’t want to have some dragons hanging around?
Going in to the book, the RH aspect lent me to believe this book was going to be steamy. It really wasn’t. Just because our heroine is gonna end up with 4 men, doesn’t mean it needs to get HOT. I appreciated that the author didn’t feel the need to make it overly sexual just because it was RH.
Bottom line: a very light, easy read with enjoyable characters. Some of whom happen to be dragons part of the month. The storyline of the 4 books as a whole has a complete story arc, I would recommend reading them in order.
