“You know, just because my name is Charming doesn’t mean I have some kind of damsel-in-distress complex!” -Elliott James, Daring
Grade: 4.5
Daring may not be as good as the first book in the series but it’s still an exceptionally good read. It feels like the author looked around and said, “Oh, so I have to write more of these now? Huh. I guess I need to create a game plan here.” and that game plan included splitting up his characters, throwing his hero into the woods, and killing a lot of people with a lot less humor than the first book.
Daring finds our hero John Charming a full blown werewolf, on a break with his friends, and living with a were pack – oh excuse me they don’t like being called a pack, they are a clan or a paw or some such crap – living in the woods.
There is a LOT OF PLOT going on in this book. In fact so much this book is split into parts. The reason is mostly because this book as far as I can tell is the book that sets up the series and the rest of the world. Where Charming was a one off. Daring is the book where everything gets real.
So while this book isn’t as “good” and not as “funny” as Charming on a pure enjoyment level, I can see it in the future of the series being one of the best. Right now though, I just read it and was glad to get the details of Johns background etc. But I missed having Sig and the team members together.
That was the biggest weakness for me. James did a great job writing an action packed, still funny book that is set to spin the series into the places it needs to go. But as soon as you took John away from his team – especially Sig, I was kinda ho hum about it all. I need my romance! I need my other characters! I miss my friends.
Bottom Line: If you enjoyed Charming at all then this is a MUST. You can start here and still be ready for the series. It’s a good read for sure. I’m already reading Fearless and it’s BOMB!!!
Audible Review: The reader is so darned good. Personally I can’t imagine reading this book when you could be listening instead.
